This course, run by the Production Managers Association (PMA), offers participants the chance to find out exactly what it is like to work in television.

Tutor Linda Stradling, who has decades of experience in television production, will give a fascinating overview of the TV industry, explaining all you need to know about how programmes are commissioned, production costs, and who does what in the hierarchy of roles.  Take a look at a more detailed schedule for the day. 

As the course is limited to 14 people, you will also get plenty of opportunity to ask questions so that you will come away with a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips.

As well as production managing and teaching, Linda Stradling is the author of "Production Management for TV and Film – The professional guide", the definitive book on production management, and a media trainer at the National Film and Television School.

The different genres of TV

 

10.30am       Roles in TV – Who does what?

The creative versus production.

Skills required for each.

Hierarchy.

Discussion -What roles do you think you would be best suited for?

 

11.15am        BREAK

 

11.30am       Explanation of commissioning of TV programmes.

                    Funding of drama productions. 

                    Broadcasters in the UK, US etc

                    Co-productions.

 Television budgets and schedules explained.

                     View clips of a few programmes.

                     Estimate the cost and time needed to make them.

 

1.00pm           LUNCH

 

1.30pm           The 3 periods of a schedule:  Pre-production, production, post production.

                      What happens in each period and how they may overlap.

                      How the budget is constructed with examples of a budget template.

                      Cost monitors and cost reports.  Who does them and why.

                       Insurance – why, what and who it covers.

                       Explain compliance. Errors and Omissions (E&O).

 

3.30pm           BREAK

 

4.00pm            Health and Safety – what is a Risk Assessment.

                       Clip shown and risk assessed.

                       Contracts – between Producer and Broadcaster and for each employee.  Brief explanation.

                       Archive, copyright material, CGI, music and contributors – paperwork, licences needed
 
                       Post production – what is it?  How long and where?

                       Delivery.   Masters and paperwork – what goes where?
