Sightseers
Find out more about Ben Wheatley's latest film, Sightseers. Released on 30th November.
We spoke with member of thecallsheet and the Make-up designer of the film, Nadia Stacey.
What can you tell us about the story of Sightseers?
The story centres around a couple Tina and Chris who are setting off on a caravan holiday around northern England. First stop Crich tramway museum! Things take a bad turn when they run someone over but it's just the beginning of a murderous adventure! It's really dark but really really funny.
more after the trailer....
Where did you look for your inspiration for these characters?
Inspiration.... Um... A tough one... These two had to look very very normal and glamour was not an option. I knew the locations were going to be remote and Ben (Wheatley) doesn't like checks or fuss so I didn't want to set either of our characters up with big make ups that would have been impossible to maintain.
Alice Lowe and Steve Oram both wrote the screenplay and play the lead roles, did they have a particular attachment and understanding of how those characters looked?
Alice and Steve have been working on this for a long time so knew these characters inside out so had come with lots of ideas. They had started out as a stand up sketch when they were on tour with Steve Coogan. Ben is very active in the make up process as well so it was a real team effort.
This is Ben Wheatley’s follow up to Kill List, what’s he like to work with?
He's brilliant, you feel completely safe in his hands even though the shoot day is not completely structured as he and Laurie Rose (DOP) may just decide to shoot something because the light looks amazing. I'm OK working like that though, it inspires me. He's a really gentle, lovely man despite the horror and gore you see!
The film is set in some very remote parts of Northern England, was it a challenge to shoot?
If I remember correctly we had about 36 different locations! We were all actually on a caravan holiday with the actors!! We filmed somewhere once and the hail was so hard we were screaming! It made us all pull together as a crew though. The caravan blew over! Laurie made us badges that said "we survived the desolate place!" It was a lot of fun though!
