Five Films to see in 2013: Song for Marion
Song for Marion
Director: Paul Andrew Williams
Producer: Ken Marshall
Cast: Terence Stamp, Gemma Arteton, Vanessa Redgrave
Production Company: Steel Mill Pictures
Release date: 8th February 2013
"Gemma Arterton is so likeable in this film it's disgusting! In years to come, she is going to be a bigger star than she already is."
Paul Andrew Williams’s latest film is a departure from his previous work, London to Brighton, The Cottage and Cherry Tree Lane. He leaves behind the often grizzly and tense thrillers in favour of a crowd pleasing comedy drama. ‘Song for Marion’ stars Terence Stamp, who joins a choir group called the OAPZ following the passing of his wife Marion. The group is led by Elizabeth (Arteton).
The film was produced by a member of thecallsheet.co.uk, Ken Marshall and Steel Mill Pictures, the company created by Marshall and writer/director Paul Andrew Williams. He told us: "Song for Marion is a film I'm incredibly proud of and hopefully everyone can relate to, as it deals with big universal themes and is ultimately about family". When asked about the story he said: "... It is an emotional experience watching this film! But there are plenty of laughs and an audience should come of out the cinema with not only a tear, but a smile on their face..."
The film has already been screened at Toronto and London Film festivals to popular acclaim the performances have already been generating interest, Stamp in particular. Marshall told thecallsheet: “The cast is phenomenal for what is essentially a very low budget British indie. Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave are not only icons but legends of British cinema. They have a beautiful chemistry on screen. Gemma Arterton is so likeable in this film it's disgusting! In years to come, she is going to be a bigger star than she already is. And Christopher Eccleston is such a quality actor and such a nice guy. They all bring a real honesty to their roles that are essential for a film like this. Paul (writer/director) and I were very lucky to have them on this journey with us.”
The bittersweet comedy is expected to appeal to all age groups and we think it will be a very popular Valentines date movie, especially as it is going up against ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ which is also released in mid February.
Shot in the North East in the early part of 2011, Marshall said: “We shot the film in the County Durham and Newcastle area and it was a real pleasure working up in the Northeast. Everyone was very film-friendly and we had a great crew with good experience. I wouldn't hesitate to work up there again”
Steel Mill are preparing their next film to shoot in the summer of 2013. Thecallsheet.co.uk will bring you the crew information in due course.
