"McCullin is a man of tremendous integrity and bravery... his photographs will stay with you long after viewing"

McCullin is a remarkable documentary charting the life and career of a veteran war photographer.

Don McCullin’s career as a photographer started in his native Finchley in the late 1950’s, taking pictures of his friends in the local gangs. He caught the eye of the picture desk editor at the Observer and went on to work for Harold Evans at the legendary ‘insight team’ at the Sunday Times. He worked at the Times up until 1983, when Rupert Murdoch bought the paper and the newspapers tone was redirected.

He worked on the front line of war photography around the world, capturing haunting images from Lebanon, the civil war in Cyprus and Northern Ireland among many more. He was embedded with US soldiers during the bloodiest battle of Vietnam, he surreptitiously joined a group mercenaries in the Congo and experienced the very worst of humanity.. In his own words, he “swam about with many dead bodies in canals..”

The documentary interview was filmed at McCullin’s house in Somerset, where he talks about his work and the stories behind the images. One of his most memorable photographs being the shell-shocked soldier in Vietnam (above).

The film makers Jacqui and David Morris capture McCullin on 16mm film and only using natural light – the very tools that he himself worked with throughout his career.

McCullin is a man of tremendous integrity and bravery; his reflections are considered and honest.  This is not a film for the faint-hearted viewer and his photographs will stay with you long after viewing.
